Normally I don't get excited about rumors like this but getting Upton would be huge. He and Heyward are the only two free agent outfielders worth pursuing. If we could make the deal and sign him to an extension our winter would already be a success. It will take a lot. Assuming he will be healthy, I would offer Bundy as part of the deal.

That said, Upton is a free agent after this season, so we'd just owe him the balance of his $14.6M contract.

His offense has slipped a bit (as one would expect, going to the cavernous San Diego), though slipped a bit more than you would expect, 114 OPS + as opposed to last year's 131. His 307 BABIP, while lower than his career average (330) isn't terribly low, but it might be indicative of a bit of bad luck that might be holding him back.

He would essentially quickly shore up one of the corner OF spots (though most defensive metrics have him being a slight negative in terms of fielding) at least in terms of hitting. It's of course possible with less ground to patrol at OPACY that he'd see his defensive production rise along with some offensive production.

And yes, a big emphatic NO! on acquiring his brother along with him (as aforementioned, BJ has come along with Justin to both Atlanta and San Diego) who is currently sporting similar production to what Delmon Young was doing for us, for about $16M per year until 2018.

If we signed him to a deal after trading for him.. I'd be interested but giving up a lot(which is what we'll have to do) for a few months rental is not something I'd be interested in doing.

Astros have a lot more to offer a team than we do. I could see him landing there, they definitely have the resouces to get it done and still keep a stocked farm system.

This one is tough. If the team is close then Upton is the caliber of player that could push them over the top.

But the cost is probably going to be higher then I would be willing to pay for a rental.

Would want to sign him if they can.

.252/.331/.426 (.757, 114 OPS+) playing for San Diego... would translate to about a .775 OPS playing for the Orioles, so I'd guess something like .250/.330/.445.

He would obviously be an upgrade at face value and probably spell doom for Nolan Reimold. No idea how much San Diego would want back.

Pass. I think this team is more than one player away from being legitimate contenders. The Padres will probably want a lot, too. I might think differently if I had any faith that the Orioles would pursue re-signing Upton once the season is over -- but that scenario is extremely unlikely. I definitely don't want to see another E-Rod situation where we have nothing to show for the trade the following season.
